So you know I’m always saying I’m working on lots of projects...? I’m finally allowed to share this one with you!

You may already know I’m super passionate about bridle fit being just as important as saddle fit. I’ve also noticed that with the trend in “anatomical bridles” people are assuming that buying something that has been designed anatomically is enough. The fact is, every horse is not only a different size and shape but also has different requirements. It is certainly not one size fits all, and bridles should be chosen to suit each individual horse and their needs.

I am very grateful to have been working with Claudia from @howardshoovesandhounds for a few years now. As both an veterinary physiotherapist and riding coach, Claudia has an extensive knowledge of the horses anatomy and way of going.

I was absolutely thrilled when she asked me to make this particular bridle for the gorgeous Cassie, who is a rather sensitive lady. It has taken a really long time due to re-working the design a number of times, and Covid restrictions delaying us. However I’m thrilled to say that last week we finally managed to test it out. Cassie was ridden in her original bridle to warm up, then swapped to the new one and she instantly showed less tension through her neck and back. Of course this could have been down to being more warmed up so we swapped her back to her original bridle and instantly there were the signs of tension again.

It’s time for another Tool Tuesday!

Today I’m talking about these funny little forks!
These are generally known as pricking irons or stitch markers and, as the name suggests, are used to mark the leather prior to stitching.

You’ll notice that the marks produced are at an angle. It’s this angle that gives hand stitched work a much more attractive appearance than machine stitching .

The different numbers of the markers refer to the number of stitches per inch they produce.

They also come in different widths. I tend to use the 1” wide ones for most of my work and 2 tooth markers for decorative work and shapes.

Fun fact: You have to buy different stitch markers if you stitch left handed as the angle goes in the opposite direction. Although it is technically double handed stitching, your dominant hand also holds the awl and makes the holes as you go.

Something I deal with on a regular basis, is confusion over the different qualifications and membership categories within the Society of Master Saddlers.

The most common cause for confusion is the difference between a Saddler and a Saddle fitter. To put it as simply as possible:
-A Saddler is a bench based craftsperson, who can make, adjust and repair saddles, bridles and various other types of leatherwork.
-A Saddle fitter is someone who will be able to fit a saddle to you and your horse.

There are of course a number of other categories and many people will have qualifications across multiple categories. More info can be found at mastersaddlers.co.uk
They also have a database of members where you can search for your local sms members in each category.

Replacing Girth Straps. After watching the Grand National today I was reminded of a racing saddle I had in for new girth straps.
During the repair I discovered the panel wasn’t in place properly so quickly took it apart to put it back together properly. I always try to give things a good looking over when I have them in as my saddler eyes spot all sorts of things other people often miss!
