One of the most interesting things about my job is

One of the most interesting things about my job is that sometimes I make things and have no idea what they do!

For this particular job, I was provided with an older worn out piece of leather and asked to make two new ones. This was simple enough as it wasn’t a complex make and I was able to use the original for the specifications.

I believe it is something to do with a vintage car? 🤷‍♀️ (please feel free to correct me/explain if you know!) 😂

It feels like a little while since I introduced myself and as there are some newbies here I just wanted to say hi and welcome.

So 👋🏻 hi, I’m Lucy, officially a saddler, although I tend to define myself as a leatherworker as saddles are such a small part of my job!

I make and repair a wide range of leatherwork using traditional skills and tools (because things were made better in the good ol’ days!)

I’m passionate about sustainability so use vegetable-tanned leather and source my materials from right here in England.

In my free time you’ll typically find me playing out in the countryside with my four legged friends.

I like to think this is a friendly little community and love getting to know all you too, so why not be brave and introduce yourself below?

Did you know that I make all my bridles with a lef

Did you know that I make all my bridles with a left cheekpiece and a right cheekpiece, not just two cheekpieces?!

Admittedly the difference is very small, but it’s all in the running keepers. If you look closely in the second photo you’ll see that the overlaps of the keepers on this pair of cheekpieces each face a different way.
This means when they are put in place on a bridle and are opposite each other, the overlap will point in the same direction.

This isn’t just the case for cheekpieces but all saddlery, so as you can see in the third photo, the keepers on the cheekpiece, throat lash and noseband, all point in the same direction. And just incase you were wondering, the “correct” direction for the keepers to face is backwards, so effectively the top overlap runs in the same direction as the horses hair.

I was also always taught that the direction of the keepers helped to increase the durability of the keeper. When a horse gets wet (it happens a lot in England) the water will start to run in the direction of the coat. If your keepers are the “wrong” way round, it’s far easier for water to work it’s way in and rot the stitching.

Now you don’t need to panic, I think it’s fairly obvious that if your keepers are the “wrong” way round (or you have two left cheeks 😉) it really isn’t a big problem. However I do think it highlights one of the many, little details you’ll find on a traditional hand made piece of bridlework. Because it’s all about the little things 💁‍♀️

Needles. As I’m sure you can imagine, the needles used in leatherwork are a little bigger than regular sewing needles. Interestingly they also come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

Big and small, curved and straight, blunt and sharp. Each one has a different use but somehow I still manage to stab myself with every different type 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

This is your monthly reminder to perform a safety check on all your tack!

These stirrup leathers are in great condition but the stitching is starting to go. If they were to break at a crucial moment it could result in a horrible accident. Luckily for this rider, I’ll re-stitch both straps and they’ll be as good as new.

Checking your tack regularly is so important and if you aren’t sure about something, just ask your local saddler and they can advise you.

Remember, safety is always the most important thing.

This binocular case came in a couple of weeks ago

This binocular case came in a couple of weeks ago for a new strap. When it was in I couldn’t resist giving the whole thing a good clean up and tidying up some of the old and worn stitching. Hopefully it can now be enjoyed for many years to come.
