It’s been a month since the National Saddlery Co

It’s been a month since the National Saddlery Competition and yes receiving medals for my work feels AMAZING. 🏅 But, I absolutely love seeing my products used, it’s what they are designed for after all!
So here’s a little reminder to not keep your leatherwork tucked away in pristine condition! It’s tougher than you think and use only adds character, (just don’t forget to regularly clean and feed with a bit of balm!)

I’ve always been a summer person and hated winter, but for some reason, this year I’ve not been dreading it nearly as much.
Perhaps after so many lockdowns I’ve missed the freedom of enjoying everything winter has to offer? Plus now home is a cosy place to warm up, not a prison for what felt like an infinite time!

Well after a rather surprising night yesterday, you’re being treated to two posts in two days.

Last night I attended the National Saddlery Competition at Saddlers Hall in London.
I had very little faith in my entry, largely due to the box getting totally soaked on the way to the post office so I was sure it would have been ruined.
In fact I wasn’t even planning on going until a couple of friends persuaded me to, and another friend agreed to come with me (thanks Rach.)

Well as you’ve probably guessed by now, I did much better than expected and was actually awarded first place for the headcollar I made!

Honestly I’ve been struggling a lot with motivation recently and this really was the kick up the backside I needed.

Just some straightforward headcollar repairs on the bench this morning. Remember, a headcollar breaking is always better than your horse becoming injured, and luckily they are pretty easy to fix!

Just a short day in the workshop for me as I’m now off to get dressed into “normal people” clothes and head into London. Don’t worry, I didn’t suddenly get a social life, it’s just time for the National Saddlery Competition.
I’ve been working on my entries behind the scenes for a little while now and I’m really looking forward to being able to share them with you after tonight!

Today’s post is a hole lot of fun !

Did you know that different shaped holes are used for different purposes? Round holes are typically only used on bridles. Meanwhile oval holes are much stronger and are used on items where more strength is required such as stirrup leathers and girth straps, as well as “non-ridden” items like headcollars and harness.

Bonus fact for you, there is also such a thing as the “correct” distance between holes. The space between round holes is normally the same as the width of the strap, while the space between oval holes is the width of the strap plus 1/8”.

As with many traditional saddlery “rules”, you will find plenty of exceptions these days. This is due to many factors like changes to manufacturing methods and quality of materials.

At the end of the day, all that matters is your tack fits correctly and is safe!

This is a question I’m getting asked more and more. I like to say there is no such thing as a stupid question but…😬

The simple reality is, here at Lucy Ellis Leatherwork, the gender you associate with is unimportant. All belts are made in the same way, you pick the size and style, and I make it. Simple!

In other news, what do you all think of the new crown belt? Very similar to the classic but with a beautiful crown buckle (also available, the crown dog collar!)
