I love the autumn/winter vibes of this stunning photo by @thefuzzysheepphotography, featuring my classic belt. Sadly the past few days have been far to cold to show off any belts, instead they’re all tucked away under layers of coats! We actually woke up to a dusting of snow here in Hertfordshire, post below if you have snow or not and where you are!

I’ve spent the past 3 days at the knebworth Christmas fair where, perfect for getting into the spirit of Christmas. Was so lovely to meet so many people, particularly fellow crafters and small businesses (may have even made a head start on my Christmas shopping!)🥶 I was amazed at how many braved storm Arwen to get a head start on their Christmas shopping.

Ohh it’s a chilly day today. Personally I’m not a fan of winter but at least at this time of year we’ve got Christmas to look forward to!

It’s time for your leathercare reminder!

The weather is getting wetter and so it’s the perfect time to give your leather the love it deserves. To keep it in tip top condition, I always recommend a beeswax based leather balm, but remember to follow your manufactures advice.

Top tips:

❇️ Wet weather means dry leather! When leather gets wet, the water molecules binds to fat molecules and both are pulled out as it dries. So if your leather gets wet, don’t forget to give it a feed!

❇️Don’t put your leather near a heat source, if it’s wet allow it to dry at room temperature and then give some feed.

❇️Pay particular attention to areas that get more wear or strain. That includes any holes or buckle areas.

❇️The flesh side (the less shiny side) of the leather absorbs more than the grain side so please remember to feed that side as well!

❇️Finally, horsey folk! Cleaning and caring for your tack is the perfect opportunity for a quick safety check. In particular check the leather around buckles and holes for stretching, cracking and other signs of wear. Also keep an eye out for loose or worn threads!

(If in doubt please don’t be afraid to ask, the safety of you and your horse is always the top of my list!)

As I’m sure you’ve all seen, this summer the wonderful Holly Outtridge came over to do a little photo shoot, a large focus of it being my hands at work. I had mixed feelings about this as while I know that my hands are my livelihood, I’ve never looked at them and thought they were particularly beautiful. Well I needn’t have worried as Holly is incredibly talented and the pictures came out wonderful (as I’m sure you all have seen!). I particularly love the way she captured my tools.

Saddlery tools have changed very little over the years and good tools are hard to come by. For that reason, a number of my tools have passed through many other saddlers hands before coming to my workshop. I can often be found on eBay looking for new gems as the reality is, the old tools are often the best tools!

Something I love about these tools is the stories they tell. Their imperfections are all part of the journey, who made them, who used them, whether they were cherished or just thrown into a tool box.

That got me thinking... Why is it that I think the imperfections of my vintage tools are beautiful, yet think the scars on my hands are ugly? Surely it’s exactly the same thing?
The scars, blisters, calluses and other signs of wear are all a part of my story, and that is kind of beautiful.

Something a bit different, can you believe that’s a piece of leather!?
I’ve been meaning to have a go with combining some carving and leather paints so what better option than pumpkin carving! 🎃
Not sure what I’ll create next but this certainly brightened up a gloomy Monday for me!
